3 Tips for Making Your Own Cleaning Products

By now you’ve probably heard that many of the cleaning products sold at the store contain chemicals that are bad for your indoor air quality (IAQ), your health, and the environment. A good place to start improving the IAQ in your Port St. Lucie, Florida, home is by making your own cleaning products. Eliminating harmful ingredients like phthalates, triclosan, ammonia, sodium hydroxide, from your cleaning products will help the environment and your IAQ.

Add Baking Soda

Baking soda is a popular at-home solution for grime, tough stains, and bathroom mildew. It’s slightly abrasive and is a natural deodorant, so it’s perfect for getting the scum out of your kitchen sink and off your bathroom tiles. To treat tough stains in the bathroom and kitchen, use baking soda and warm water to make a paste. Apply the paste to your grout or tile, and then wait about 15 minutes before scrubbing it off.

Use White Vinegar

White vinegar works wonders as an all-purpose cleaner. Like baking soda, it acts as a mild deodorizer and tackles bad smells as it cleans. You can create a cleaning solution mild enough for hardwood floors, or powerful enough to soak your shower head; it all depends on the ratio of vinegar to water. More vinegar will add more cleaning power!

Try Rubbing Alcohol

For windows, mirrors, and your faucets, make a solution with warm water and rubbing alcohol. The quick evaporating properties in rubbing alcohol make it great for getting those surfaces shiny and streak-free. You need about one-fourth of a cup of rubbing alcohol for every two cups of water. You can also add white vinegar to this solution for extra power.
