3 Ways You May Be Wasting Energy in Your Home

Does your utility bill seem to get higher every month, despite all your efforts to save energy? A few bad habits might be sapping your money and your comfort. Many homeowners in Port St. Lucie, Florida, might be unknowingly contributing to their higher energy bills. If you can cut back on these three energy-wasting habits, you’ll be well on your way to higher efficiency and lower utility bills.

Vampire Energy

Just like a vampire sucks the life out of its victim, vampire energy sucks the energy out of your home. It does so through your electronics and appliances that are left plugged in when they are not in use. Even when you turn off your electronics, if they remain plugged in, they continue to draw electricity constantly (vampire energy) and waste that energy.

When you’re not using electronics and devices in your home for long periods, unplug them or plug them into a power strip that is turned off. Turning off the power strip will cut the flow of power to the electronics.

Neglecting Maintenance

Neglecting routine HVAC maintenance is an open doorway to energy waste. Without maintenance, systems can get dirty and fall into disrepair. These conditions reduce efficiency, increase utility costs, and can even damage the system.

Make a habit of scheduling preventive HVAC maintenance. You can do some maintenance yourself, such as changing air filters, but the leave the bulk of the work to your local HVAC contractor.

Inefficient Thermostats

If you don’t have a programmable thermostat, you run the risk of wasting energy air conditioning your home while you’re away. You might forget to adjust the temperature before you leave home each day. Not only will this cost you more money, but it also contributes to wear on the system. A programmable thermostat makes temperature and humidity management much easier.

Install a programmable thermostat, which will allow you to program your air conditioner to maintain a higher temperature while you’re away. You will program it to restore a more comfortable temperature in time for your return home.

If you are tired of struggling to maintain efficiency and comfortable temperatures in your home, then tackle energy-wasters head-on. To get started on an efficiency-boosting preventive maintenance habit, give Preferred Air Conditioning & Mechanical, LLC a call at (772) 905-3358.
