Cleaning Your A/C’s Coils Keeps It Running Right

Florida homeowners know that an inefficient home can cost them a lot on their energy bills every year. There are many ways you can make your home more energy efficient, such as adding insulation, sealing leaks and installing a smart thermostat. However, one of the most important things you can do is make sure that the A/C coils in your air conditioning system are clean and functioning properly.

How coils work

Your air conditioning system has two kinds of coils. The evaporator coils are in the air handling unit inside your home. Air flows across these coils to cool and dehumidify the air inside your home. The condensing coils are in the condensing unit outside your home. These coils are filled with refrigerant that transforms back and forth between a gas and a liquid to transfer the heat in your home to the outside air. In both cases, dirt and debris can interfere with the A/C coils’ efficiency.

How A/C coils become dirty

Both the evaporator and condenser coils have a tendency to attract dirt and debris. This is primarily because their surfaces are almost always damp from water condensation. In addition, the cooling fins can serve as perfect places for dirt to collect. Dust is far and away the most common contaminant you’ll find on coils. Even inside your home, there’s always plenty of dust and pollen to coat the evaporator coils. Regularly replacing air filters can help, but over time the A/C coils will inevitably become dirty.

Professional cleaning

Cleaning the coils inside and outside your home is a dirty and exacting job. That’s why it’s best left to a professional. If you have a regular service contract, this cleaning will be included as a part of your annual maintenance plan. An HVAC professional will know exactly which cleaning materials to use in each circumstance.

Ensuring that the A/C coils in your system are clean will make your home more comfortable and save you money. If you have any questions, please contact Preferred Air Conditioning. Our team of professionals are happy to help you.
