Debunking 4 Energy-Saving Myths

With the mercury rising in South Florida, Boca Raton homeowners are always on the lookout for energy-saving tips to help reduce utility costs, but not every tip is a good or even practical. Here are a few energy-saving myths you should know.

Turn the AC off When You’re Out

It takes a lot of work for a central air conditioning system to cool down a home to the desired temperature during the hot summer months. It’s easier for the unit to maintain a specific temperature range over a particular period. For that reason, it isn’t a good idea to turn off the AC when you’re not at home. It will take a long time and require a lot of energy for the AC to reach the right temperature after it has been turned off. Instead, invest in a programmable thermostat to lower the temperature while you’re away and gradually restore the ideal temperature by the time you return.

Cranking Up the AC Will Cool the House Faster

Most people think you need to turn the thermostat way down to cool a house faster, but this just doesn’t work. AC units cool more or faster when the thermostat is drastically lowered. They just run longer, which will only waste energy. Again, your best bet is to program your thermostat based on your schedule.

Keep the Ceiling Fan Running to Cool the Room Down

While it’s a good idea to use your ceiling fan to help circulate conditioned air, this effect is only beneficial when there’s someone in the room. Ceiling fans don’t cool down the room; instead, they pass the cool air over your skin. This is the wind chill effect. Use fans along with your AC, but don’t leave them running when you’re not in the room.

Close AC Vents in Unused Rooms to Boost Efficiency

You may think that closing the vents in the spare bedroom will help save energy, but it only makes your AC work harder. It builds up pressure in the ductwork and can lead to damage. It is best to leave your vents open throughout the house.
