Don’t Buy the Wrong Air Filter

Buying the right HVAC air filter is crucial for Lake Worth, Florida, homeowners. Using the wrong air filter can cause numerous problems with your HVAC system, including lowered indoor air quality.

The Wrong Air Filter

While the wrong air filter won’t necessarily damage the heating and cooling system itself, at least not right away, it does reduce its efficiency, which is something you’ll notice on your utility bills. When you use the wrong size air filter, or you install it incorrectly, the filter can’t effectively prevent dust from accumulating on the system’s motors and blowers. You’ll end up with a dirty furnace that can’t properly perform, and all of that debris could end up harming the system’s internal components.

Filter Types

Air filters vary in size, thickness, and materials. The most common air filters are made from spun fiberglass, pleated paper or polyester fibers, and electrostatic pleats. You can also choose from washable or disposable filters. Regardless of which type of filter works best with your system, it is important to change or clean the filter as required to maintain healthy air quality in the home.

MERV Ratings

Every air filter features a MERV rating, which is the product’s Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. Essentially a porousness scale, the MEhlity to trap the smallest particles like viruses and bacteria.

While you may assume that using a high-efficiency HEPA filter with a rating above 13 would be the smart option, not every system is designed to work with fine-mesh filters. If your system isn’t compatible, the filter will drastically restrict airflow. You can still opt for a high-efficiency filter, but make sure it’s one that is suited to your particular heating system.
