Effective Ways to Minimize Indoor Pollutants

Relaxing in your South Florida home after a hectic day is one of life’s simple pleasures, especially when you know your environment is safe, clean, and healthy. With people spending up to 90 percent of their time inside, however, poor indoor air quality is becoming a real concern. To minimize pollutants in your home-sweet-home, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends observing the following three basic strategies.

Start at the Source

The most effective way to improve the quality of your indoor air is to prevent harmful contaminants from gaining a foothold in your home in the first place:

  • Set aside a place by the door where you leave your shoes, bags, and outer clothing so that you don’t track allergens indoors.

  • Keep household dust from circulating through your home by changing your HVAC filter at the first sign of dirt and debris.

  • Prevent the growth of mold, mildew, and bacteria by cleaning up spills, or water damage quickly. It is also important to address leaks and any window condensation as soon as possible.

  • Household products like cleansers and paint can leak gas even when not in use, so make sure they are closed properly and stored away from common living spaces.

Let in Fresh Air

In the Palm Beach area, we are blessed with a tropical climate and therefore many days of sunshine. Adequate ventilation is essential for decreasing pollutants and controlling moisture. When the weather is nice, open a few windows.

A well-maintained air conditioner goes a long way toward keeping the air free of contaminants, but it’s even more effective when augmented with some type of ventilation system. These ventilation upgrades use energy captured from your system’s outgoing air to pre-condition incoming air, so you can breathe easier while also lowering your energy expenses.
