How Do You Get the Most Savings Out of a Programmable Thermostat?
You’ve installed a programmable thermostat, but do you know how to program it? If not, then you’re like many other homeowners who are baffled by the complexities of digital programming. But don’t give up just yet. A programmable thermostat can actually save you money on your utility bills if you learn how to set it the right way.
Programming Modes
Programmable thermostats come in four programming modes, so be sure to choose the one that’s right for your home:
- The 1-week model allows you to set the same schedule every day of the week.
- The 5-2 option sets one schedule for a five-day work week and a separate schedule for the two-day weekend.
- The 5-1-1 model programs a heating and cooling schedule for the five-day week, and two different schedules for Saturday and Sunday, for example.
- The 7-day thermostat program option is the most flexible, allowing a different heating and cooling schedule each day of the week.
Programming Your Thermostat
In winter, 68 degrees(F) is the recommended setting when you are home. The thermostat is to be set 10 degrees lower, at bedtime or when away. In summer, set the temperature at 78 degrees(F) when you are home; and in this case higher, for bedtime or when you are away. The savings come from programming thermostat based on occupancy or activity. Program these settings to take effect half an hour or more prior to getting up, leaving for work, arriving home or retiring for the night.
The savings from a programmable thermostat won’t happen if you constantly override the programming, so stick to it. Get a locked cover if you are concerned about other occupants adjusting the settings.
