How Indoor Temperature Settings Impact Your Sleep Patterns

For many, the evening is the most precious time of day. After a long eight hours at work, homeowners in Palm Beach, Florida, just want to be able to unwind at home. For our especially busy friends, the only relaxation they get is while they’re sleeping. Few things are more frustrating than tossing and turning in an uncomfortable bed in a room that’s too cold or too warm. Temperature setting plays a major role in sleep quality, and understanding that impact will improve your chances of getting a good night’s rest.

Temperature and Sleep

Ideal temperatures are just as important when you’re falling asleep as they are while you are sleeping. Even just slight differences above or below air conditioning or heating preferences can make it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep. This likely occurs because when you begin to fall asleep, your brain reduces your body temperature, which also ends up inducing sleep. However, when a room is too hot or cold, it interferes with the temperature your body is trying to achieve. It’s easier for your body to find that perfect temperature in a cooler room, than one that is hot. So what’s the perfect temperature?

Best Temperature

Comfort varies according to the individual — that’s why there’s such a thing as “thermostat wars.” What’s too cold for one will be just perfect for someone else. There is no one temperature that will work for everyone. However, somewhere between 65 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit is generally a safe range. Find a happy medium that satisfies everyone, even if someone needs to throw on an extra blanket. Sleeping in appropriate clothing is also important. Light clothing is perfect for summer, but don thicker pajamas during winter.

Set your programmable thermostat to keep the room at preferred temperatures during the night. Set it to adjust gradually to maintain energy-efficient temperatures when you awake and leave home.

Every minute of sleep is precious, so make sure you get the rest you need by using your programmable thermostat to keep your bedroom comfortable. Don’t have a programmable thermostat? Call Preferred Air Conditioning & Mechanical, LLC at (561) 202-1422 to have one installed.
