How Low Humidity Can Affect Your Skin

When you live in Palm Beach, Florida, it’s tempting to focus all of your attention on fighting high humidity. However, low humidity can also have several negative consequences for your health and comfort. Quite often, you will see and feel the effects of low humidity on your skin.

Low Humidity Dries Out Your Skin

For the majority of the year, we have to contend with heat and humidity in our region. Humidity levels tend to drop with the falling temperature because cold air cannot hold as much moisture as warm air. Using heaters will further dry out the air — and dry air means dry skin.

Low humidity removes oils from your skin, robbing it of an important layer of protection. You may find that your skin itches more during winter and becomes rough, red, tight, cracked, scaly, or flaky. If you give in and scratch, that will only exacerbate the problem. If you already have a pre-existing skin condition, such as eczema, low humidity will make it worse. Cracked or peeling skin, in particular, can be dangerous. Not only does it look unattractive, but it also leaves you more vulnerable to infections.

Manage Your Home’s Humidity Levels

The best way to protect yourself is to keep your home’s humidity level constant. Recommendations vary; but in general, it is recommended that indoor humidity levels should fall somewhere along the 30 percent to 50 percent range. If your indoor humidity levels routinely fall outside that range, it is a good idea to invest in an appropriate indoor air quality system.

Above 50%, you face high humidity levels and a dehumidifier will restore more comfortable conditions. Under 30%, you will start to feel the effects of the drier air and a humidifier will protect your skin and home from any negative effects. You can also keep your skin hydrated by drinking plenty of water and applying moisturizing lotion or oil.
