How Summer Storms Can Affect Your Air Conditioner

From sizzling summer heat to torrential rain, modern HVAC systems are rugged pieces of equipment built to take most weather conditions in stride. When you live in Palm Beach and along the Atlantic coast of South Florida, however, summer storms accompanied by strong winds present many problems. Here’s how severe weather can impact the outdoor unit of your air conditioner and what you can do to protect it.

Wind Damage

Unless the outdoor unit of your AC system is properly secured, hurricane-strength winds can move it. Even if it doesn’t go very far, it will be far enough to cause damage to the unit and your property. The Florida Division of Emergency Management urges homeowners to ensure that outdoor units are anchored to the pad to minimize the risk. If you’re handy with tools, you can do this yourself using kits available from the manufacturer. Otherwise, it’s best to leave the task to your trusted HVAC technician.

Airborne Objects

During wind-driven storms, the greatest threat to the outdoor unit comes from flying debris. This includes everything from tree branches and roof shingles torn off by the wind, to everyday objects like lawn furniture and gardening tools. Mud generated from rainstorms can spray into the unit and cause damage too. Ensuring that there’s proper drainage around the unit’s foundation is the most effective way to keep water and mud at bay.

Lightning Damage

Considering Florida is known as the lightning capital of the United States, even without severe weather, lightning strikes pose a threat. Lightning can damage your air conditioner and present the risk of a fire. If your unit has been hit by lightning, contact your HVAC professional as soon as possible.
