Minimize Bio Pollutants for Healthier Indoor Air Quality

Preferred Air ConditioningGood ventilation, filtration and HVAC maintenance are all important factors that contribute to healthy indoor air quality, but they’re not the whole story.  Cleanliness and an attention to detail are critical parts of keeping your home healthy. Here are some things you can do to minimize bio pollutants such as pet dander, pollen and pest waste within your home.

Keep Up With Pet Grooming

Even if you’re not allergic to animal dander, your pet is a source of bio pollutants. Groom and bathe pets regularly to keep the level of shed hair and dander low in your home. Keep dogs’ toenails trimmed to minimize the amount of mold or pollen they track in on their feet. If you suffer from allergies, use wet wipes on the animal’s coat after walks or trips outside.

Control Moisture

Wet areas provide the perfect breeding ground for mold and mildew, as well as provide a water source for mice, cockroaches and other such pests. Take these measures to reduce unwanted moisture in your home:

  • Address even minor plumbing problems immediately.
  • Use exhaust fans and ensure they all vent to the outdoors.
  • Avoid putting carpet on concrete floors; opt for easy-to-clean area rugs instead.
  • Monitor your indoor humidity, and correct with humidifiers or dehumidifiers as needed.
  • Cover bare ground in basements or crawl spaces with plastic sheeting.

If you notice moisture damage anywhere in your house, particularly in the attic or basement, around pipes or near boilers, consult a professional immediately to correct the problem before it significantly impacts your indoor air quality.

Establish Dust Control Habits

Dust is a pervasive force in every household, and it requires constant vigilance to control it. It’s also made up largely of organic material, much of which may impact your allergies. Wash bedding in hot water every week, and vacuum and dust your home regularly. Clean curtains, blinds and upholstered furniture frequently.
