What You Need to Know About IAQ and Allergies

It is easy to ignore indoor air quality (IAQ) until there is a noticeable problem. A Consumer Reports study revealed that 70 percent of Americans are not concerned about indoor air quality. However, whether we can see or smell problems, there is much in our indoor air that should be cause for concern. Knowing about IAQ and allergies can make a difference in the overall health and comfort of your household.

Combustion Particles

Combustion particles are one of the most common types of indoor air pollution. Gas ranges, furnaces, and fireplaces release gases, soot, and other particles into your home’s air. Exhaust fans help, but do not eliminate these combustion particles. To combat the effects of these particles:

• Seek clean-burning appliances, certified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
• Clean appliances regularly
• Ensure systems that use fuel such as gas, propane, and kerosene are checked for leaks
• Try to prevent smoking indoors
• Change your HVAC filters regularly
• Let fresh air in as often as possible

Regular Cleaning and Repair

Your HVAC system can impact your home’s indoor air quality. Ductwork needs to be cleaned regularly by a professional. Filters can become clogged allowing dust, dirt, and debris to circulate through the system and throughout your home. This will prevent the system from performing efficiently and can contribute to respiratory problems for occupants. Twenty-five percent of participants in the Consumer Reports survey have never cleaned or replaced their furnace filter. People with allergies to dust, dust mites, and dander should be particularly careful.

IAQ – A Serious Matter

A recent US government report revealed that more than 23 million persons in the United States have asthma, approximately 13.6 million adults have been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and just as many are undiagnosed. Even more alarming, are the financial, economic, and social implications. The report puts expenditure on asthma care at $20.7 billion per year. Considering the number of persons afflicted with respiratory problems from simple allergies to more serious problems, it is surprising that indoor air quality control is not more seriously regarded.
