Which HVAC Tasks Are Okay for DIY Projects?

If you cringe when you need HVAC repairs because you don’t want to get that HVAC repair bill, you’re not alone. Many homeowners in Port St. Lucie, Florida, wish they could just get their hands dirty and fix their HVAC systems themselves. Unfortunately, working on your HVAC system requires expertise and special tools. For most tasks, it’s best to leave HVAC maintenance to the professionals. There are, however, some HVAC tasks that will improve HVAC performance and reduce utility bills and that are ideal DIY projects.

Change Air Filters

One of the simplest HVAC maintenance tasks is also one of the most important. Air filters should be checked and replaced regularly. You reduce the frequency of filter changes if you have a whole-home air purifier. Changing or cleaning your filter will improve HVAC efficiency and indoor air quality.

Remove Debris

Cleaning may not sound like the most exciting DIY project, but it’s well worth it. It’s vital that the area around the outdoor component of your HVAC system remains clean and free of debris. Trim back trees or shrubs so that you have at least two feet of clearance around, and five feet above the unit. Use a hose with low pressure to gently spray away any dirt or grass. A dirty compressor will reduce efficiency and cause problems that may require the help of a professional technician.

Seal Leaks

Sealing drafts in your home will increase your HVAC system’s efficiency. Identify breaches in your thermal envelope by looking for cracks, gaps or separation around windows and doors. Once you’ve found places where unwanted air can enter or conditioned air can escape, seal around windows with fresh caulk and around doors with weatherstripping.

You can have a hand in bringing comfort and efficiency to your home by following these simple DIY HVAC maintenance steps. Leave all of the electrical and technical repair aspects of HVAC maintenance to our licensed technicians here at Preferred Air Conditioning & Mechanical, LLC.
