Your New Air Conditioner: Why Saving Money Now Could Wind up Costing You Later
Investing in a completely new air conditioner can be pricey, but that doesn’t mean that you should cut corners. In fact, attempting to replace only one component of your split system could create even more financial woes down the line. To help you avoid the stress and expenses associated with a mismatched air conditioner, here are four reasons why you should upgrade your entire system now.
1. Maximize efficiency
The indoor coil and outdoor condensing unit of your split system air conditioner are designed to work together as a team. When these components are matched, you will enjoy maximum efficiency and comfort from your air conditioning system. When you choose to only replace one component (ie: the outdoor unit), however, you are splitting up the team and incorporating incompatible equipment into your system. Because of this, the entire system should be replaced at once, even if one unit is failing before the other.
2. Ensure system longevity
A recent mandate from the federal government has required manufactures to begin phasing out the usage of harmful R-22 refrigerant and replacing it with a more environmentally friendly, non-ozone depleting agent like R-410A. If you attempt to introduce an R-410A-reliant unit into a system that uses R-22, it can spell disaster. Ultimately, the mismatch will lead to premature system failure.
3. Protect your warranty
Integrating two incompatible split-system units will go against manufacturer instructions. As such, any problems or breakdowns that you experience with your system will not likely be covered by the warranty.
4. Take advantage of utility rebates
Many local utility companies offer rebates on the purchase of eligible, energy efficient HVAC equipment. Because efficiency is only maximized when equipment is compatible, however, your utility company may require you to provide evidence that your new air conditioner is an Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) Performance Certified matched system.
