Common AC Operating Mistakes You Should Avoid
There are some operating mistakes that you can make with your air conditioning system that although quite common, could prove very costly. Your home’s air conditioner can last for years on end, and it helps if you avoid the following mistakes:
Forgetting to Change the Air Filter
The dirtier the air filter gets, the less airflow your air conditioner is capable of pulling through the filter. In addition, your indoor air quality will be compromised. Without enough airflow, your AC won’t cool properly and over time, it could even fail. Many experts recommend changing the air filter at least every three months.
Running the System Continuously
Contrary to popular belief, your cooling system isn’t designed to run all day long. This could result in a shorter life due to excessive wear and tear. If your AC has to run for long periods to cool your home, there may be other issues. Closing your blinds and using insulated curtains are examples of steps you can take to help reduce your home’s cooling load.
Changing Temperatures Constantly
Constantly adjusting the thermostat also increases wear and tear on your AC system. It is also inefficient and wastes energy. A programmable thermostat will take the guess work out of setting the temperature and can result in significant savings on your energy bill.
Letting the System Ice Over
Restricted airflow or insufficient refrigerant are just two causes that could lead to ice buildup on the evaporator coil and other parts of the air conditioning system. If left to its own devices, ice buildup could wear down and even destroy the compressor and other crucial system components.
Skipping Out on Annual Service
You should always have an experienced HVAC technician inspect and maintain your cooling system on a yearly basis. Yearly maintenance can help prevent potential problems with your air conditioning system.
