Ductless Mini Splits Offer Flexible Design and Are Easy to Install
When choosing to add on to an indoor air comfort system, the existing system must be taken into account to make the right choice. If you have a “non-ducted” existing system, or are adding a room and you can’t extend the ductwork you have, a ductless mini-split-system may be the best choice.
Ductless mini splits have two main parts:
- Outdoor compressor and/or condenser
- Indoor air handler(s)
The indoor air handlers are small, making them more flexible to use when space is an issue.
Zoning is easy to set up for heating and cooling in each room, as the handlers hang on the wall where needed. One outdoor ductless system can supply up to four indoor air handling units so the zoning design can also be four zones (rooms or areas). Since each zone needs to have its own thermostat you only need to use the indoor comfort system in that area when occupied. This translates into saving energy and money.
Ductless mini splits require no ductwork. This keeps the cost down and project time to a minimum. No intrusive demolition or construction is needed. The connection between the outdoor compressor/condenser and the indoor air handlers usually needs only a 3-inch hole through a wall for the conduit to be placed. Most manufacturers of ductless mini splits provide many different lengths of connecting conduits.
Since mini splits have no ducts, any energy loss normally found with ductwork of central forced air systems, is eliminated. Energy loss through ductwork can be as high as 30 percent of energy consumption devoted to indoor air appliance use.
Finally, ductless mini splits are one way to keep your home safer. Since there is only a small hole in the wall, there is no need for a large wall mounted or window installed air conditioner that can be a target for intruders.
