Give Your HVAC System a Break When the Weather is Mild

Fortunately for homeowners in Fort Pierce, Florida, the winter tends to be more on the mild side. You can capitalize on those periods when the weather is really mild and give your HVAC system a break with the following tips.

Use Your Shades

During the day, leave your window shades and curtains open to let in the natural sunlight. You will easily get natural heat for your home this way. Consider also installing heavy window shades during the winter, so that at night they add extra insulation and stop any drafts or leakage, in turn keeping your home warmer.

Reverse Your Ceiling Fans

If your ceiling fan has a reverse function, use it in the winter to push the warm air down. Since hot air rises, using the reverse function takes all that warm air that would be wasted at the top of the room and spreads it throughout the room. Without turning up the heat, those rooms will feel warmer.

Try a Space Heater

Although a space heater still uses energy, it doesn’t use anywhere near as much as your home heating system uses. When it’s only slightly chilly, a space heater effectively warms a specific area so you don’t waste energy heating the entire house.

Install a Programmable Thermostat

If you are away during the day, use your programmable thermostat wisely so that you save energy. You can program the thermostat so that there is little to no need for air conditioning when you are away. You can set it specifically so that it will restore comfortable temperatures by the time you return home.

It is quite likely that there will be periods in which you won’t need to use the HVAC system at all. After months of stifling heat, use the opportunity to open windows and let cooler air circulate throughout your home. All these methods can help to save energy and improve the efficiency of your system.

You don’t have to waste a lot of energy to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures. Think of smart ways to save. For more tips, call the experts at Preferred Air Conditioning & Mechanical, LLC at (772) 905-3358 to schedule an appointment for your South Florida home today.
