How Often Should I Change My Air Filter?
Homeowners in Palm Beach, Florida, often ask us how often they should change their HVAC filter. Every HVAC system uses a filter to prevent harmful contaminants from moving into the air you breathe. But you must change it regularly for it to work correctly. Read on to get a better idea of how often you should change the filter in your heating and cooling system.
Basic Filters
The first step to figuring out how often to change the HVAC filter is to take a closer look at the type your system uses. If yours contains a basic filter that measures between 1 and 3 inches thick, you should change it every 90 days. If you have members of your household that suffer from allergies or respiratory conditions, change it every 30 days for better protection.
Heavy-Duty Filters
Some high-efficiency HVAC systems use heavy-duty filters that last much longer than standard filters. These are more expensive to purchase but will last up to six months. Your HVAC system’s user manual will tell you the recommended schedule for filter changes. You may want to increase the frequency if you notice signs of poor indoor air quality, though.
Average Filter Change Schedule
In a vacation home or a space occupied by a single resident, filter changes happen an average of once every six to 12 months. In a home without pets that has more than one occupant, the average is 90 days. If you have a single pet, the filter change schedule increases to every 60 day. Homes with allergic residents or multiple pets would benefit from a filter replacement every 20 to 45 days.
